Each week Tack Shack gets asked which hoof product is best to use for dry conditions.

As we all know whether you are in the southern states in summer or in WA, NT or SA then at some point its gonna be hot....and dry.

On the first signs of cracking and splitting of your horses hoof you reach for the hoof oil right? - Wrong.

Tack Shack works closely with professional nutritionist and scientists at top hoof product manufacturers.

In a recent conversation with Kate Hore, NAF (Natural Animal Feeds) Chief Nutritionist in the UK advises that by using a hoof oil actually prevents moisture getting into the hoof. Any if you think about it, this is logical. Putting Oil on the outside wall of the hoof will actually provide a waterproof barrier thus stopping moisture from entering the hoof.

Kate's opinion was to use a hoof oil for show days when a high gloss finish maybe needed.

NAF are an official supplier to the Great Britain Equestrian teams and Tack Shack is always happy to be able to pass on the experts advice.

The solution suggested is to use a hoof moist which is like applying a soft wax like substance into wood. You do the same thing with Hoof moist products letting the product absorb into the hoof over time. Like with all things, prevention is better than cure and it is advised to apply hoof moist all year round and not just in the dry seasons.

We completed tests in 2014 and 2016 working with a cattle station in the northern part of South Australia. Why?-well it was the driest place in Australia that we could find and provided a perfect testing ground for the Hoof Moist product.

It passed with flying colour with comments from the station manager " we have not seen out horses feet in these conditions for years".

Tack Shack supply's a range off hoof products from hoof hardeners, fillers, moisturisers and oils. We have added new brands like th world famous Keratex range alongside our other trusted brands including NAF, Gold Label, Carr Day and Martin and Absorbine.
